The field site: Akacievej, Hedehusene

Description of the field site, spill history, overview

  • Former dry cleaning facility in Denmark (1973-2003)
  • PCE spill in 1976 → dissolved plume with ca. 400 m length
  • Excavation of most polluted soil (DNAPL) in 2006
  • Installation of a pump-and-treat remediation system in 2007: pumping with 2.5 m3/h, treatment with activated carbon and reinfiltration
Remediation system and contaminant plume in 2006 and 2015

Conceptual model development

The setup of the conceptual model for the Akacievej field site is going to be explained.

Geologic model

Setup of a geologic model based on larger scale geology, borehole information, borehole cores, geophysical measurements etc.

Geology at the Akacievej site

Flow field

Measurement campaign to determine groundwater flow field in the larger plume area. An extent larger than the plume is beneficial to setup flow models with little influence of the boundaries on the flow field.

Flow field at Akacievej determined by head measurements.

Determine aquifer parameters

Pumping test, slug tests, tracer tests, waterworks measurements, remediation system, outcrops etc.

Contaminant distribution and dynamics

PCE concentration measurements before, during and after the pumping test, combined with previous investigations. Modeling interpretations and conceptual model of the plume propagation.

PCE distribution at Akacievej during remediation
